Don't Forget - Write This Down Sports Parents

Jun 30, 2020

Summary

  • How does writing things down help you as a parent raising an athlete? Answer: Reminding you what your intentions are.
  • We have a vision of what we want our kids to do in sports. We also have a vision of how we want to be as “sports parents”. Yet as the season goes on and emotions start to rise up, we may forget what kind of parent we want to (or need to) be.
  • Write down or have a picture that reminds you of your goal as a parent raising an athlete.
  • This means you will need to know your goals. How you want to develop your kid into a great athlete. Knowing how you will develop them physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
  • An example; If you have a picture of your kid taking their first steps. It could remind you to be supportive and encouraging. That’s what you did for them to learn to walk. That’s what you want to do for them to learn to play a sport. The picture is just a reminder of how you want to perform in your kid’s life.

Hey, David Sabi here with Kid to Athlete, helping parents raise athletes. Now, today, we're talking about... What are we talking about? Oh, yeah. Writing things down so you don't forget. And you're probably thinking, "Well, how does that help me raise my kid into an athlete?" And it really depends on what you're writing down. And what I want you to focus on writing down is your goal and your intentions of helping develop your athlete, right? Because as your kid plays sports, things start, emotion starts to go and we start to lose track of what our purpose, our goal is, and how we want to help our kid become an athlete. So writing something down and having it posted somewhere where you can see it is going to be, I think, very helpful to keep you on track of what your main goal is.

Now, goals can be anything from just being present in their life to, "I want to be energetic and help them." You can write that down or you can not. You don't even need to write. If you have an image or a picture that represents what your goal is, then that could be your reminder. Let's say you have that. You want to be present and you want to be energetic so that you have the energy for your kid. So a picture could be of Thor, right? The superhero, holding a hammer in the sky, lightning bolts. And so every time you see that picture, it reminds you, "Oh, yeah. I need to be present. I need to have the energy for my kid." And so that could be an example. So you don't have to have anything crazy. It doesn't have to be a long, big goal.

It could be something simple. But some other examples that I like to present is reminding yourself that what you're really there for, for your athlete, is support. If you wanted to, you can use a picture of them when they first started walking. And this, I like to use as an example as well. Because if you think about your kid, when they first started walking, you were probably very supportive. Now, you weren't walking, you weren't grabbing their feet and walking for them because that's not going to help them walk. But what you did was you fed them well, so they can become strong enough so they could walk on their own. And then when they fell, you were encouraging, at least I hope you were encouraging. You weren't like, "Oh, come on. You could have done better than that."

So when they're playing sports, as they get older, it's going to be the same thing as if they are walking. And you just got to remember how we can support our athlete to become a great player for whatever. But what you're looking for is to be supportive and encouraging. And sometimes, I feel like we forget that as the season goes on. So writing it down or having a picture can help remind us. So a picture of your kid walking, it could be that reminder for you to just be supportive and encouraging. Sports and learning new skills is just like walking. Your kid has to do it, but you can be there to support it. So write down what you want or get a picture. And if anything, write down in the comments below, some of your goals or intentions as a parent to help your kid to become an athlete. And if you haven't already, hit that subscribe button and I will see you on the next video. Thanks for watching.
